What is Obesity?

Obesity is a health condition that is on the rise globally and very much so Ghana.

Most people live with Obesity but unfortunately as a result of less education on the disease, they are not aware until it gets complicated.

Obesity is simply, having excessive or high percentage of body fat in your system.

Obesity is largely preventable because it is mostly caused by our daily life styles.

 

How do I know if I am at risk of a possible Obesity?

An individual with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and above is considered obese and needs to consider looking at his/life style.

Body Mass Index is the value derived from the mass (weight) and height of your body.

Simply calculated by dividing your body weight by your height expressed in kg/m^2.

You might want to do this to have an idea of where you stand as far as Obesity is concerned.

     Consume less processed sugar

2.            Eat more of vegetables and fruits

3.            Eat plenty of dietary fiber

4.           Engage in regular aerobic activity

5.            Focus on reducing daily stress

6.            Include weight training exercises

7.             Make sure to involve the family in your journey.

 

Lifestyles to practice to Avoid Obesity in Children

 Know what your child is eating outside of the home, for instance in school

 Encourage eating slowly and only when hungry. 

 Breastfeed infants, when possible

 Eat healthy foods as a family

 Limit unhealthy foods in the household

 Institute fun and exciting physical activities for kids

 Limit your child’s screen time

Make sure your child gets enough sleep

 


Why is it Important to Prevent Obesity?

Preventing obesity plays a very important role in good health.

Obesity is associated with a long list of chronic health conditions, many of which become more difficult to treat over time.

These conditions include:

Type 2 diabetes,

High blood pressure

Stroke

Sexual health complications

Sleep problems

Mental health conditions

Liver diseases

Gallbladder disease etc.

By paying attention to your lifestyles therefore, you are avoiding Obesity and as well preventing these dreaded health issues.
